Boating, Fishing, and Travel Information for Nonopapa, Niihau Island, HI

Ni’ihau 15 miles west across Kaulakahi Channel from Kaua’i, is seventh in size and westernmost of the eight major islands. Ni’ihau has an area of 72 square statute miles, a NE-SW length of 16 nautical miles, and an average width of 3.5 miles. Near the middle of the island is a high tableland with occasional rises or cones, the highest of which is 1,281-foot Pānī’au.
The population of Ni’ihau was 230 in 1990. One family owns the entire island and operates it as a cattle ranch. There are no scheduled communications with the island.
